Gears are used to transmit power between shafts rotating at different speeds. In a wind turbine, a combination of gears may be used to increase the low rotational speed of the turbine blades to a high speed for a standard generator, normally, 1000 rpm or 1500 rpm. There are various types of gears, the following three types are often used in wind turbine gearboxes:
1 Spur gear is the simplest and most common type of gear, where teeth are parallel to the rotational axis of the gear. Tooth contact is primarily rolling, with sliding occurring during engagement and disengagement.
Gears can be combined in different configurations; the following two types are often used for wind turbines:
